First baroclinic mode gravity
and Rossby wave speeds

First baroclinic gravity wave and Rossby wave speeds were calculated from CSIRO Atlas of Regional Seas Climatology (CARS2009) temperature and salinity fields following the method of Chelton et al. (Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1998). Data are provided on a 0.5 degree grid in latitude and longitude.

  • The map below shows the estimated first baroclinic mode gravity wave speed from this dataset:

  • The data are provided in the following formats: MATLAB NetCDF
  • The Python script used to generate the data is also provided: Python script
  • The proportion of grid cells in the vertical at which the calculated N^2 (buoyancy frequency) was negative and was corrected according to the algorithm of Chelton et al. (Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1998) is provided which may be used as a measure of reliability of the estimated wave speeds.
